Obituary

John F. Friend, Sr., of Sang Run, thought to have been Garrett

County's oldest resident since the death of George Marley last

week, died at his home at Sang Run on Saturday, March 29.  He was

aged 96 years, four months and 11 days.  He had been in falling

health during the winter months but was ill only a few days.

 

Deceased was born in Sang Run November 18, 1844, a son of the

late Elijah and Elizabeth Smith Friend. He spent his entire

lifetime in that community as a farmer.  In 1871 he was married

to Rachel Ross Friend, who died in 1919.

 

Surviving are five sons, John F. Friend, Jr., Alfred Friend,

Charles Friend, Andrew Friend, all of Sang Run; Elijah J. Friend,

of Oakland; also one daughter, Miss Dicie Friend, of Sang Run;

four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and many other

relatives.

 

Funeral services were conducted from the Sang Run church on

Tuesday afternoon, April 1, at 2 o'clock, with Rev. S. E. Ryan,

Methodist minister of Brandonville, W. Va., officiating, assisted

by Rev. R. L. Greynolds, Friendsville, and Rev. Taylor of

Cranesville.  Interment was in the family cemetery on the farm.
