JAMES W. FRIEND, MEMBER OF SCHOOL BOARD, DIES

Succumbs at Friendsville Residence Late Tuesday Evening.

 James W. Friend, 69 years old, a member of the Garrett County

Board of Education and a prominent resident of Friendsville, died

rather suddenly at his home at ten o'clock Tuesday evening.

Death was due to erysipelas and complications.

 Mr. Friend was well and quite favorably known throughout the

county.  He had served for two years on the local school board.

Prior to that time he had been postmaster at Friendsville for

about twelve years.

 Mr. Friend was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church,

Friendsville and politically a staunch Republican.  His father,

the late Rev. Henry E. Friend, was a minister of the M. E. church

for thirty three years, dying at the age of 91 in 1926.

 The funeral of Mr.Friend is to be conducted Friday afternoon at

two o'clock from the M.E. church, Friendsville, with interment in

the Friendsville cemetery.  Rev. J. F. Hockenberry will

officiate.

 Schools in district No. 2 will be dismissed Friday afternoon out

of respect to the deceased.

 Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Howard Skidmore,

Friendsville, and the following brothers and sisters, Edwin E.

Friend, Mountain Lake Park; G. B. McClellan Friend, Friendsville

and Willey S. Friend, Oakland; Miss Sudie Friend, Mountain Lake

Park; Charles W. Friend, New York City; Clifford Friend, Moscow,

Idaho; Ray C. Friend, Richwood, W. Va.; and Mrs. J. Arthur

DeWitt, Hoyes. Two grandchildren survive.  One son, Foster

friend, died in an army camp during the World War, and a daughter

preceded him in death.
