Delmas G. Fike

 

RAWLINGS - Delmas Gene Fike, 54, Rawlings, died Tuesday, Feb. 18,

1997, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D. C.

 

Born March 8, 1942, at Swallow Falls, he was the son of the late

Harry D. and Ruby V. (Friend) Fike.

 

Mr. Fike graduated from Bruce high School in 1960 and joined the

U.S. Navy as an enlisted man after high school. He went through

the ranks to become a chief warrant officer, and entered the

officer's program. He retired as a lieutenant in 1980 with 20

years of deicated servied. He served aboard the USS Intrepid, USS

Cadamus, USS Mount Vernon, USS Nanahaula, and USS Belleau Wood,

retireing from San Diego, California to Rawlings. He served in

Cuba, Vietnam, and the Iran Crisis.

 

Mr. Fike was an active member of Danville Church of the Brethren,

Rawlings, having served on the church board, as board chairman,

Sunday school teacher, and a dedicated servant of the Lord. In

addition to his active church work, Mr. Fike enjoyed woodworking,

fishing and the sports activities of his children and

grandchildren. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr.

Fike will be greatly missed by his loved ones, his fellow church

family, his neighbors and friends. Surviving are his wife of 35

years, Sandra Mae (VanMeter) Fike; two daughters, Sherri L. Ziler

and husband Wayne, McCoole, Shelby S. Fike and fiance Mark Fost,

Potomac Park; one son, Delmas Gene Fike Jr. and wife Kelly, Short

Gap, W. Va.; three beloved grandchildren, David, Amanda, and

Lindsey Ziler; four brothers, Lloyd F. Fike and wife Clara,

McCoole, Harry E. Fike and wife Sanday, Frostburg, Blair M. Fike

and wife Karen, Newport News, Va., and Blaine M. Fike and wife

Patty, Biloxi, Miss.; two sisters Linda L. Keller and husband

David, Orange Park, Fla., and Janice E. Martin and husband

Howard, Keyser, W.Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews,

great-nieces, and great-nephews.

 

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home,

Cresaptown, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be

conducted at the funeral home Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev.

Robert Nealis and Louise Nealis officiating.

 

A memorial service will be held by the McCoole VFW at the funeral

home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

 

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. Military

honors will be accorded by the McCoole VFW Post 6775 at the

gravesite.

 

Pallbearers will be nephews Andy VanMeter, Jason VanMeter, Sean

Ellifritz, Richard Martin, David Kenner, and Matt James.

The family of Delmas Gene Fike finds peace and comfort in knowing
