DAVID SHERIDAN CUSTER

David Sheridan Custer, aged 86, died Sunday night, October 10,

at 8 o'clock, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and

Mrs. T. Joseph Stanton, at McHenry.  He had been in ill health

for several months.

 

He was a retired merchant, having been in business in

Friendsville

since 1888.  He was affiliated with the Friendsville Milling

company

since 1917, and helped to organize the First National Bank in

Friendsville, remaining as director until a few months ago.  He

also

helped to organize the Bruceton bank at Bruceton, W. Va.

 

Active in church work he was a member of the Methodist Church at

Hoyes, later transferring his membership to the Friendsville

Methodist church where he was superintendent of the Sunday

School and a member of the official board.  He helped to build

two churches in Friendsville, the present one and one that was

destroyed by fire.  During his lifetime in the Friendsville

community

he saw Confluence and Oakland railroad built and discontinued.

 

Deceased was born December 3, 1861, at Hoyes, a son of the late

Emanuel and Rebecca Friend Custer.  Surviving are one daughter,

Mrs. Stanton, at McHenry; two sons, Aubrey R. Custer,

Friendsville;

D. Harrison Custer, Akron, O.; 9 grandchildren; four brothers, H.

A.

Custer, Grafton, W. Va.; George W. Custer and Roy M. Custer,

Baltimore; William Arthur Custer, Friendsville; two sisters,

Mrs. Margaret Casteel, Oakland; and Mrs. W. S. Friend, Oakland.

 

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon at

2 o'clock from the Methodist church at Friendsville, with Rev. W.

E.

Wade officiating.  Interment was in the Blooming Rose cemetery.
