FRANCES L. COMP

 

Deer Park - Frances Loretta Comp, age 86, of Deer Park, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.

   She was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Deer Park, and was a daughter of the late John Robert Letrobe Thrasher and Grace Marley Thrasher.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Lambert L. Thrasher.

   She graduated from Frostburg State University, formerly Frostburg State Teachers College, in its last two-year class, then attended the University of Maryland and Western Maryland College. She retired after a 35-year career having taught at Boiling Spring, Lynndale, Oak Grove, Wilson, Swanton, Deer Park, and ending her career at Second Term School, Swanton.

   She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department where she served many years as secretary.  She was a past president of the Allegany-Garrett County Fireman's Association, and held several appointed offices with the Maryland State Firemen's Association.  She also was a charter member of the Loar Auxiliary of Garrett County Memorial Hospital; and was a past secretary and worked for many years in the Auxiliary Gift Shop at Garrett Memorial Hospital.  She was a member of the Deer Park united Methodist Church since 1924, making her the oldest church member.  She also served as Superintendent there for 33 years and taught Sunday School for many years.  She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and a 50-year member of Chapter #67 Order of the Eastern Star.  She also was a life member of the Garrett County Historical Society.

   Surviving are her husband, whom she married in 1936, George F. Comp Jr.; two brothers, Harrison M. Thrasher and his wife, Betty, and Carl W. Thrasher and his wife, Helena, all of Deer Park; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Thrasher Reeder, Annandale, Va.; and on sister-in-law, Pleasant Thrasher, also of Deer Park.

   Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home in Oakland on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

   Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating.

   Interment will be in the Deer Park cemetery.

   Members of the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

   The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department or the Southern Rescue Squad.

DEER PARK - Services

   Frances Loretta Comp, 86, Deer Park, will be conducted at the Durst Funeral home, Oakland, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating.

  Interment will be in the Deer Park cemetery.
